B&O 1948 Series

Il catalogo delle parti staccate del '54, appena pubblicato su RM, spiega ed aiuta a datare la foto su RM della loco nella versione con lo strano fumaiolo a vite. Si vede anche che questa è una versione semplificata sia nel biellismo che nei mancorrenti (mancanti) sulla caldaia. Curioso il fatto che fossero comunque praticati i 4 fori per il montaggio dei supporti dei mancorrenti stessi.

Quella col fumaiolo a vite è la prima rifatta in polistirolo, dopo le primissime versioni in bakelite.
Inizialmente (1954) è uscita solo con l'impianto completo I B&O A/R. Anche se nell'immagine è rappresentato il modello vecchio, nel testo specifica che il modello è stato completamente ridisegnato e monta il nuovo motore. Quella con l'impianto aveva i biellismi semplificati e macava dei mancorrenti, probabilmente era provvista di fori come predisposizione per la futura versione come modello singolo, con mancorrenti e biellismi complessi in catalogo dal 1955.
Complimenti per l'attenzione dedicata al catalogo: non ci avevo badato. I vecchi cataloghi servono anche a datare i modelli, ma effettivamente sono più affidabili quelli dei ricambi, che devono essere veritieri, rispetto ai i cataloghi generali non sempre graficamente aggiornati con l'evoluzione dei modelli.

I am looking at a purchase on ebay for a B&O 1948 Series Switcher Saddle Tank Locomotive and the seller has advised me that the Green Series did not have inner connecting rods. Is this statement correct or do you think the connecting rods been removed for some reason.

Hi Howard, I can't help You.
I dont know really well this early model.
In the catalogues it is show with the the connecting rods, but i never seen the real model in "green" edition.
Maybe someone can help You

Riepilogo la domanda di Howard: su ebay c'era una Dockside in bachelite senza la biella di accoppiamento, e su rchiesta di Howard il venditore ha risposto che nella serie verde questi modelli uscivano senza quella biella.
Non ho mai visto dal vivo il modello serie verde e non so se effettivamente le cose fossero così.
Se qualcuno sa qualcosa ....

I have been watching this very item as well, as far as I could read the seller didn't mention the Green Series:

"Because this is the first type : only the later models were equipped with the connecting rods..."

If so, it looks that it's a matter of earlier or later types. I don't have any definitive answer (I own 3 of these, all WITH connecting rods), however your troubles with different gears show that the evolution of this model was quite steady, so anything is possible.
Anyway, if you succeeded in purchasing the loco, you have the reply, because there should be no provision (threaded hole) for the rod in the front wheel set.

Traduzione sbrigativa - ho seguito anch' io l' asta, in realta' il venditore non parla di Serie Verde, ma sostiene che la biella di accoppiamento fu aggiunta solo in un secondo tempo. Questo e' verificabile senza incertezze, poiche' in questo caso (biella assente fin dall' origine) le ruote dell' asse anteriore non devono mostrare alcuna predisposizione (foro filettato) per la biella di accoppiamento. O no?

Hello Howard,

I am not an expert, so I just gave a look to the old catalogs in the Rivarossy Memory website. It is true that in its early years Rivarossi had a line of "economy models" which was also called "Green series"; this series already disappeared in the 1954 catalog. I checked carefully but the only instance where there is an image where the connecting rod could looks like missing is the following detail from the 1947 catalog:

This image belongs to a set which existed both in the standard and in the economy version but, unfortunately, Rivarossi never explained which was the difference between the two sets.

Non sono un esperto, così ho dato solo un'occhiata ai vecchi cataloghi nel sito di RM. È vero che nei suoi primi anni Rivarossi ha avuto una linea di "modelli economici" che furono anche chiamati"Serie verde"; questa serie sparì già nel catalogo 1954. Ho controllato attentamente ma il solo caso in cui vi è un'immagine dove la biella d'accoppiamento sembra mancare è il seguente dettaglio dal catalogo 1947:
Questa immagine appartiene a un set che esisteva sia nella versione standard che in quella economica ma, purtroppo, Rivarossi non ha mai spiegato quale fosse la differenza tra i due set.

Gentlemen,

I just want to thank you all for the investigation for me over the missing connecting rods. I decided not to make a final bid for this Locomotive as I have three all working perfectly with inner connecting rods. However this would not be the first B&O Locomotive that I have seen for sale on ebay without these components even when the front driving wheels have been made to accept the the connecting rod retention screws. I just love these old models and I run them regulary. Two are totally black and a later version is red lined however I cannot find referrence to this model in any of the old catalogues either.
